If you`re new in Taiwan or wanting an insight into the place, Smoke of Spirits is an excellent novel. For me, it really captures the essence of this quirky little island, as well as dealing with the issues of the ex-pat community here in general. Beautiful and original descriptions, a deeply engaging main character and informative too. It could either give you a different window on Taiwan, or be a great reminder of where you`ve been.
Smoke of Spirits does a brilliant job of capturing all the smells, sounds and colours that make Taiwan such an interesting experience. It's great being able to identify with a book so much. The descriptions of so many things that I take for granted after 3 yeas here are spot-on.My kindergarten kids have been away all week because of the foot and mouth virus. (which I was just reading about in your book). I really think all people coming to live in Taiwan should read this book.
